Gan Eng Seng (1844-1899) was a labour contractor who was known for his generosity to many charitable causes during the era of the British Straits Settlements of Malaya and Singapore. He also set up the Anglo-Chinese Free School in 1885 in his shophouses along Telok Ayer Street, presently named Gan Eng Seng School. He also contributed to the Thong Chai Medical Institution, the Ee Hoe Hean Club, and Tan Tock Seng Hospital which still exists today and is one of the largest public hospital locally.

Interesting to note his Qing Dynasty Imperial Title, which is of the 5th Rank.
