Development Plans

Planned Road and Housing Development
September 2011:
The Singapore Government announced plans to construct a dual fourlane road through Bukit Brown to alleviate traffic congestion along the bordering Lornie Road and Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) during peak hours. The Land Transport Authority adds that the new road will cater to the further increase in traffic demand. It is estimated that the traffic along Lornie Road will increase between 20 to 30 percent. The road will begin construction in early 2013 and is estimated to be completed by 2016.

The road through Bukit Brown is placed in a strategic location between Thomson Road, Adam Road and the PIE. This major addition will aid future developments in Bukit Brown. Once the new road is completed, the existing Lornie Road will be reduced to a dual two-lane road. The extra space created will be used for park connectors alongside the existing nature reserves such as Central Catchment Nature Reserve and Bukit Brown. All in all, it is estimated that the new construction will affect about 5 percent of the 100,000 graves present in Bukit Brown. That amounts to nearly 5000 graves.
